The Bolthouse Foundation is a Bakersfield, California-based charity that describes its purpose as “to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by supporting charitable and religious organizations whose ministry, goals, and operating principles are consistent with evangelical Christianity.” The Foundation determines if grantees are “consistent with evangelical Christianity” through their adherence to its Statement of Faith, which includes, among other tenets, a belief in biblical literalism and a rejection of evolution. The Foundation is funded by the former owners of Bolthouse Farms, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Bolthouse, and is notable for its support of organizations focused on opposing gay rights, such as the Alliance Defending Freedom (formerly the Alliance Defense Fund), the Family Research Council, and Focus On The Family. In 2006, the foundation began funneling all of its contribution (almost $72 million between 2006 and 2013) through the National Christian Foundation, a large Christian charity that then distributes money on behalf of its benefactors.
